Did paid trolls get article removed on Newsvine exposing corruption in Walker's Wisconsin?

Activist Leland Pan speaks at rally with Wis. state flag "re-do" by Madison artist and political cartoonist Mike Konopacki

NOTE TO GROUP MODERATORS: I'm not sure about the protocol for posting an article like this, so if I have put this on your group inappropriately, please remove and advise me via NV message.  Thanks, and sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused.

-------------------------------------

I don't really understand how this happened.

I posted a seed containing various links to stories about corruption and legal shenanigans going on here in Wisconsin.  It went to top seed quickly. It started to get comments.  And then--ZAP--it disappeared!

It got bounced from top seed to be replaced by somebody else's seed that only addresses one aspect of the corruption going on here, specifically three arrests made in the ongoing "Walkergate" scandal (one of them is a former Walker aide). After it disappeared from the top seed, I could not even find it on my column.  I put a great deal of work into it, researching and linking different sources to give a comprehensive overview of what's going on.

I had distributed it via email to my subscribers, but it was removed "by the Newsvine community" per the copy of it I found in my NV history section. I never got an email from Newsvine alerting me.  The notice attached to the removed article said to contact Newsvine  to object.  I did some time ago and have not heard anything.  There was nothing posted in the comments section from anyone who objected, nor was there anything in comments from any of our Newsvine moderators.

Another mystery is that the GOP's law firm referred to in the article has now scrubbed its home page of a link to a blurb about an award it got for "pro bono" work--oddly after giving free legal services to a state supreme court justice under investigation for multiple ethics violations. At last check, the info is on the web site, buried, hard to find, but no longer on the home page.

I believe that my article was attacked by trolls on the payroll of the GOP and/or interests affiliated with the GOP and supportive of Scott Walker, who, as we all know, is the target of a massive recall effort. He is getting massive funding from out of state sources, mostly due to the US Supreme Court's Citizen United decision.

Our state is in a hostile takeover by powerful corporate elites who want to destroy our working class, our unions, and our way of life.  It seems, too, that in this election year, with so much at stake, Newsvine is under attack as well.  This should be of concern to anyone who values the free exchange of news and views.

I have re-posted the article, and I ask your support in keeping the information available to the entire Newsvine Community that did not get an opportunity to view it.  It's on my column in the "seed" box, but it contains much more information than a typical seed:

Law & Order Wisconsin: Former Walker aide, two others arrested in 'Walkergate' probe as court blasts GOP lawyers that gave state judge free services in ethics scandal then got Bar Assn 'pro bono' award

The original title of the article had the word "sleazy" in it, which I have removed. I've seen far worse adjectives used on Newsvine.  I repeat. I don't understand why this got pulled.  At. All.  Please share your thoughts/comments with me.

Thanks.

I have not had experience with this except when NV was going nuts and one of my articles kept coming up with the "Whoops" notice. I panicked as it has been going on for a while and a lot of fun. It eventually popped up again with a lot of comments. Hopefully your article received so many comments it bogged the NV system down. Good luck.

You know you're getting into the good stuff when you start getting personalized censorship! I've had experiences with Monsanto stuff vanishing since GE bought us.

In November a whole slew of comments stripped from a thread from 2006, some comments were restored later but not all, at least 100 still missing! Never have gotten an official reply from anyone about the "problems" in rankings or my still missing conversations.

The "Monsanto evidence" theft is on the record in the thread, at the moment anyway, until that conveniently vanishes too. Sure ain't like the old days that's for sure, miss the heck out of a time of Seattle replies and corporate trolls as something to weed out not promote by gaming the system!

Pamela, thanks for info. I will check out that article of yours.

I think the system is vulnerable to the gaming you described. I have participated here and there in a community removal. I've even sent NV an email now and then about an article that was no good, i.e. based on misrepresentations or lies That's a CoH violation.

So, there's a system problem. This shouldn't be happening. The system needs to be improved so that valid articles don't get removed.

I'm baffled. Enlighten me.

If you've had an article/seed "Removed by the Community," it will be in the Removed list under Edit Content. You are supposed to email Staff with a request to restore it. They will tell you what corrections to make, or restore it if there are no errors.

You do not just blithely copy over and republish something without permission of the Staff. That's a violation of #5 of the CoH. It defeats the ability of the Staff to moderate Newsvine and to catch individuals who collapse things without justification.

I'm sorry that it's the weekend, and that you will have to wait until Monday for a resolution, but that's not just cause to further violate the rules.

@AI

I suspect that there are people who are politically opposed to you, who are trying to control the narrative. Actually, scratch that - that point is obvious.

No, what I suspect is that they have found a way to "bump" articles from the front page, and the politics featured page, by reporting the articles just enough to get them taken off of the features. My guess is that they clicked on your article one-too-many times and actually got the whole thing taken down.

I think it's time to implement an identity feature on the reported violations - an author ought to be able to see who has reported his articles as violations, ditto with seeing reports on comments.

Newsvine is broken because the trolls have taken our tools and learned to use them against us.

I did not know you could block an article or flag it until now. How many trolls would it take to bring down an article or seed? It is sad but I am sure trolls especially paid trolls would learn to use our tools against usl.

If that is the case, then any article supplying facts about Walker would be a target. Look how Walker has done as much as possible to silence or discredit the citizens of a wonderful state. So many of us support WI and look for new information daily.

Bondi, that is indeed what happened. Some users flagged it as inaccurate or something, which it is not. Sally and I exchanged info about that. The article got back up without her intervention.

There is a flaw in the system. If paid trolls, for example, attack an rticle because it makes their benefactors uncomfortable, it's going to come down and sometimes the seeder/author wn't know until going back in to check on it. So the trolls can stop a hot aritcle in its tracks. That's the system flaw.

I know there are not enough NV staff to monitor all that goes on here, but NV should have a system that automatically and immediately generates an email notice to the seeder/author when seeds/articles get gang banged out of existence.

Keep in mind that there are people here on the vine that are actively campaigning for specific candidates and will report your seed if it's counter to their candidate's platform. There are specific viners who are doing nothing but seeding articles and campaign material for their candidate. I won't say who specifically, but it's pretty easy to spot as they come with the same message on every seed in attempts to discredit and derail the conversation.

I didn't see the original article, but if you used the word "sleazy" in your title, it sounds as if the NV community collapsed it for being sensational or inaccurate. Doubtful it was some GOP paid troll conspiracy. If it wasn't a justified collapse, the moderators will restore it when they get around to it; they're pretty swamped, so you can't expect them to get back to you the same day.

There have been far worse adjectives used, for sure. I think there's a failure in the system. You bet, there aren't enough Newsvine staff. So it's easy to be gang banged out of existence.

The internet is crawling with paid trolls! And it happens more during an election year. So it's easy to quash debate. There were reports over the last couple of years that they were also busy scrubbing web sites like Wikipedia.

Check the link I provided above. The content is the same. In fact, when I went to re-post the story, it reverted to the original! I have no idea how that works.

The other thing: note that the law firm eliminated the front page link to its 'pro bono' story. That's no accident.

I know NV staff is small, overworked I bet. There is so much going on here, it must be hard for them to keep up.

It's odd, though, that we get notices when a seeder or author deletes a comment but there was not notice here when a "community" did that to my story.

Perhaps NV could at least be persuaded to program the system into notifying a user when this happens. I thought it was.

Yes, I use cartoons a lot. I have friends in the business.

Also, the note pinned to the article, which was still in my NV "history" but not otherwise available, is that it was removed by "the Newsvine Community."

Also II, and this is really telling, at least to me, the law firm changed its web site after I reported the irony of them giving a state supreme court justice free legal services and then getting an award from the Bar Assn for their pro bono work.

Rightwing censorship, that's my guess.

I see it most often when in the comments a conservative opinion gets roundly criticized, then the first comment in the thread gets collapsed, and the whole conversation disappears. It really matters not what that first comment is ... it could even come from the author or seeder himself.

If the system at NV allows for that, it's an open invitation for all kinds of suppression of information and ideas. ... Especially by an army of paid trolls. And they DO exist. It's not folklore.

AI, is there anything we can do to help solve this problem? I would like an answer myself.

Let us know.

When Sally got in touch I told her it too late anyway but suggested that she relay to NV that at least a community collapse should generate an email notice so that the seeder/author can take timely exception.

I was hoping this article would spark some debate on the subject, because I think this is going to get worse the close we get to the elections this year.

O"steph, your last paragraph is so appropriate. A Newt super-pac just got a $5mil donation from one billionaire and he promises to spend more on the general election. That kind of cash can buy a lot of influence. We've got to get the big money out of political campaigns.

Hey PaPa! Good to see you.

That cash infusion you mention to Newt is an excellent example of how $$$$$ influences our electoral process. We are awash in a sea of it.

These dang computers do have minds of their own and sometimes just don't work the way we think they should or the way they did yesterday. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if there are some Walker supporting trolls that watch your column pretty closely.

PaPa, I think they watch NV and other communities like this closely. I doubt this would have happened if the original hadn't made it to top seed.

There are legions of these people in the employ of powerful elites. I've been seeing and hearing a lot of reports about this for years, including this one:

I know it. I figured they were getting paid. Love to get a list of their employers. I visit MSNBC sometimes and the attackers are so numerous. A few can disrupt the entire message or take it totally off topic. As you follow them, they they have a celebration when the visitors stop showing up. They treat it like a job, enjoy their co-workers, and are well trained bullies.

    Your accusations are HILARIOUS

Name of Company - Advantage Consultants

Advantage Consultants was established to provide comprehensive marketing; public relations and governmental relations consultation to a wide variety of clients. Labor public relations, associations, etc ...

After researching your accusation, it seems more like a place where the Left can exploit their agenda. You might call them to see what they are about.

This is how TRUSTWORTHY your info is? I guess you're no different from what you claim to oppose.

Central Florida Young Republican Club, Founder and President. The CFYR club was the largest YR club in Florida (4th largest in the nation) within months of being established. With over 600 active members, the CFYR club became a political force with Central Florida with many current elected Republican officials coming from its ranks. The most notable CFYR alumni are former Florida House Speaker & Congressman Tom Feeney and Former House Speaker, State Sen. Dan Webster. The Young Republican National Federation named CFYR the “Most Outstanding Club in the Nation,” two years after Guetzloe founded the organization. Orange County Republican Executive Committee – elected 1980, re-elected in 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. Florida Federation of Young Republicans, Region III Chairman 1980-81, FFYR National Committeeman, elected 1983, re-elected 1984. FFYR Executive Committee member 1980-86. Florida College Republican Federation, Vice Chairman 1973, Chairman, 1974.

Sounds like some real "leftist" credentials to me. Actually looking at the company's website helps to understand what their agenda is. Paid trolling exists and Advantage Consultants is one of the organizations employing them.

Most jobs that are Union also need special equipment. It is not uncommon to get hurt or even worse. They are not easy jobs either. My sister was hurt so bad that she is disabled know because she broke her back in several places among other injuries from being attacked by a young man that had a pattern of this type of behavior. They did not have the staff to have back up during those years. It was common to have to life patents that were heavier than the staff. It was a job that cared for mentally, physically or psychology handicap patients that no one else would care for or could. It has changed since they brought in a Union.

The same is true to police, firemen and other state workers. For construction or mine workers, those in the Union have safer jobs, and equipment. My grandfather died very young with 6 children at the time from working in a mine that did not have equipment or safe working conditions. No Unions were available for new immigrants here from other countries like Italian, Irish, Japaneses, etc. Look at certain mines in Virginia. They still do not have Unions and entire families loose family members.

Fear, no. Paranoia can not be compared to what everyone is hearing from the right or teaparty for the last few years. Think of the statement made that were outright misinformation. Trolls are being paid and if they have figured out a way to keep seeds or articles from getting posted, everyone should be worried. I have to admit that those attacking articles, seed or comments using paranoia, seem to be misinformed or deceived. I have seen them attack their own republican party especially those that watch a corporate opinion media (non-news) program. If it can be done to what you call the left, it can also be done to independents and republicans. I know that most on the left just do not vote up or comment on a seed that is false. It is a common why to handle this without resorting to removing topics or hard work.

Spo, it's not about whether I agree or not. people are free to comment, in keeping with CoH. The issue is how a number of people can just hit that little icon to get an article dumped and there isn't even a notice generated to the seeder/author so timely exception can be made.

The ideal would be for NV to have enough staff to stop an inappropriate communithy collapse in the first place. Unfortunately, they don't.
